Commercial nuclear energy generation is the largest contributor to carbon-free electricity
production in the United States. A strong, foundational nuclear generation capacity – coupled with the delivery of new nuclear solutions – will be critical to meeting U.S. and global climate objectives and advancing U.S. commercial competitiveness.
A durable, available U.S. commercial nuclear infrastructure and a responsive, innovative supply chain are essential to the delivery of nuclear solutions. The strength of the U.S. nuclear infrastructure and supply chain will define the economic competitiveness of commercial nuclear solutions and their ability to scale to the urgent challenges in the U.S. and across the world.
The USNIC Environmental Management and Decommissioning Working Group (EMD)
supports its members’ interests across two key sets of activities that define the lifecycle of
commercial nuclear infrastructure: Construction, Supply Chain &Project Delivery, along with
Infrastructure, Logistics, and Decommissioning.
EMD will serve as a platform for USNIC members to identify policy and regulatory priorities,
coordinate best-practices, mitigate collective risk, and provide external stakeholder education.
EMD contributions may include participation in meetings, conferences, presentations, written comments, and position papers on regulatory and market perspectives.
EMD chair and vice chair will be responsible for coordination with other USNIC Working
Groups, along with the Nuclear Energy Institute and other peer organizations as necessary.
The mission of the EMD is broad, and the focused priorities of its members are diverse. The structure of the EMD is designed to provide focus and accountability around the key organizing topics for the Working Group. As such, two dedicated topical areas have been established to organize the development of initiatives as necessary, and to coordinate activities through the EMD as appropriate. Generally, the EMD will meet monthly, in order to:
• Track the development of government activities, regulations, and impacts on commercial requirements
• Identify key policy and regulatory topics constraining/enabling commercial capabilities
• Develop tools for stakeholder education, and identify processes for engagement and public communications
• Coordinate and align participation in conferences and events to drive visibility for NIC and member organizations
All USNIC members are invited to participate and contribute to the development of EMD working group priorities, which may include the establishment of dedicated Task Forces to organize and furnish relevant updates on to the members of the EMD during regular monthly meetings.

• Issues related to nuclear qualified components, supply, trade
• Track the development and application of advanced manufacturing and materials science innovations
• Assess and address workforce, regulatory, and supply chain readiness issues
• Educate stakeholders on construction, labor, environmental impacts, and economics
• Drive U.S. commercial competitiveness, exportability
Reflect the role of critical infrastructure and logistical assets in the delivery of commercial nuclear solutions across facility lifecycle (through decommissioning)
• Issues related to lifecycle maintenance, utilization for commercial nuclear infrastructure
• Issues related to packaging and transportation of commercial nuclear materials
• Provide platform for socializing lessons, mitigating collective risk, and sharing best practices for performance and safety
• Issues and activities reflecting the important role of decommissioning services in assuring commitments related to the commercial nuclear energy site legacy management
