The U.S. nuclear energy fleet and its pivotal importance to jobs, exports and clean energy leadership was the focus of a recent Atomic Wings Lunch & Learn for Members of Congress, Hill Staff and Industry on Capitol Hill.

The ongoing bipartisan educational series featured keynote remarks by Tennessee Congressman Chuck Fleischmann. Representing the Volunteer State's Third Congressional District District, Fleischmann is a leading member of the U.S. House Committee on Appropriation's Energy and Water Development Subcommittee.  He also chairs the Nuclear Cleanup Caucus.

Perspectives on jobs, economic benefits, clean energy leadership and nuclear energy intangible benefits including nuclear medicine, space and power electric vehicles, desalinization and the U.S. Navy were provided to a capacity crowd in the Rayburn House Office Building by representatives from Georgia Power, Nuclear Innovation Alliance and the U.S. Nuclear Industry Council (USNIC).

A world leading 805 billion kilowatt hours was generated by the American fleet in 2017.  Nuclear energy provides approximately 60 percent of the U.S.'s clean electricity while supporting 475,000 jobs and adding $60 billion to the U.S. GDP with an estimated $100 billion in exports.

The program was presented by the USNIC with support by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy.
