"Sustaining and Advancing Nuclear" in the Pacific Rim and "Renaissance Expectations and Opportunities in India" were the themes of the 21st Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference (PBNC) and India Nuclear Business Platform held in San Francisco and Mumbai, respectively, in October.

The U.S. Nuclear Industry Council (USNIC) served as a lead organizer of PBNC along with the American Nuclear Society, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and Pacific Nuclear Council. The Council moderated a Pan Asian plenary session on advanced nuclear featuring representatives from Japan, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.  USNIC's Millennials for Nuclear also participated in a U.S. Department of Energy-led global Millennial Nuclear Caucus panel.

Speaking at the India Business Platform, USNIC Senior Fellow Dr. Vijay Sazawal, an India market expert, addressed "Success Factors in Enhancing Capacity and Capability of Local Supply Chain" and the nexus with American nuclear energy new build initiatives.  The meeting's Nuclear Power Landscape theme also included economics, financing, nuclear liability, fuel cycle, regulatory and public perception issues and challenges. The USNIC serves on both the Asia and India Nuclear Business Platforms advisory committees.

Twenty-one nuclear reactors with a total installed capacity of 15,700 megawatts are currently under construction in India. There are nine nuclear power reactors at various stages of construction which are expected to be completed by the year 2024-25." According to the World Nuclear Association, there are about 130 operating nuclear power reactors in Asia, 35 under construction with firm plans to build an additional 70-80. The greatest growth in nuclear generation is expected in China where four Westinghouse AP1000 reactors are currently being deployed.
