Terrestrial Energy and Zachry Group Sign MOU to Accelerate IMSR Plant Development and Deployment

Charlotte, NC – September 10, 2024 – Terrestrial Energy Inc. and Numerical Advisory Solutions based in Cary, NC, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate further on the Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) site evaluation, plant development, and project deployment.

Numerical Advisory Solutions (NAS), a Zachry Group company, provides market-leading engineering for the design and safe operation of nuclear plants, including software tools and analysis. NAS has been serving electric utilities, advanced reactor developers, research organizations, regulators, architect-engineers, fuel vendors, and government agencies worldwide for 40 years.

Since 2022, NAS has been assisting Terrestrial Energy with thermohydraulic modeling of systems in the IMSR, a Generation-IV technology using a molten salt fuel and coolant. The MOU expands this existing relationship to a strategic collaboration, which leverages NAS’s extensive relationships in the industrial sector to accelerate IMSR plant development and plant deployment. The parties intend to work initially to evaluate U.S. sites for IMSR plant deployment with a focus on sites in Texas, and then subsequently on project development through to construction and commercial operation.

Terrestrial Energy’s IMSR plant uses molten salt reactor technology to deliver a low-cost nuclear plant capable of clean, firm industrial heat and power supply. IMSR plants will deliver a customizable combination of zero-carbon electricity and high-temperature thermal energy 24/7 for industrial processes from a site near, or co-located with, industrial demand from chemical, petrochemical, data centers and other energy intensive industrial activities.

“Terrestrial Energy’s IMSR plant has unique operating characteristics and deployment capabilities to deliver a competitive distributed cogeneration solution in markets where clean, firm cogeneration is prized,” said Simon Irish, CEO of Terrestrial Energy. “Our partnership with Zachry, a market leader in engineering services with expertise in key industrial sectors and regional markets, expands the capacity of our IMSR deployment to reach multiple sectors and markets, including the industrial sector based in Texas.”

“We are excited to be expanding our collaboration with Terrestrial Energy to bring the IMSR plant to industrial markets. Its dispatchable heat and electric power supply technology is highly complementary with today’s clean technologies, and a large step forward to sustainable energy supply,” said Jim Harrell, President of Numerical Advisory Solutions, a Zachry Group company. “We look forward to working together to select sites for IMSR Plant deployment and project development.”

Terrestrial Energy recently announced its membership with the Texas Nuclear Alliance. The company is also pleased to sponsor the inaugural Texas Nuclear Summit in Austin in November. Early in the year Terrestrial Energy joined the Texas Advanced Nuclear Reactor Working Group, which is organized by the Public Utility Commission of Texas, by order of Governor Abbott.

About Terrestrial Energy

Terrestrial Energy is a developer of Generation IV nuclear plants that use its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) technology. IMSR technology captures the full transformative operating benefits of molten salt reactor technology in a plant design that represents true innovation in cost reduction, versatility and functionality of nuclear energy supply. IMSR plants will supply zero-carbon, reliable, dispatchable, low-cost high-temperature industrial heat and electricity for a dual-use energy role relevant to many industrial applications, such as chemical synthesis and desalination. In so doing, they extend the application of nuclear energy far beyond electric power markets. IMSR plants have the potential to make substantial contributions to industrial competitiveness, energy security, and economic growth. Their deployment will support rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system across a broad spectrum. Terrestrial Energy uses an innovative design, together with proven and demonstrated molten salt reactor technology, which offers a unique set of operating characteristics to deliver high and compelling commercial potential. Terrestrial Energy is engaged with regulators, suppliers and industrial partners to build, license and commission the first IMSR power plants in the early 2030s.
