Statement by The U.S. Nuclear Industry Council on the Russian Attack on Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant

March 4, 2022

The following statement can be attributed to Bud Albright, president and chief executive officer of the U.S. Nuclear Industry Council (USNIC).

“USNIC condemns in the strongest terms possible both theRussian invasion of the sovereign territory of Ukraine and the recent attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP). We stand with the freedom-loving people of Ukraine, and with the workers and community supporting the ZNPP.

Putin’s barbaric actions are rightly being condemned by the majority of the world’s governments. His assault on a nuclear facility is reprehensible, as are all his horrendous acts against Ukraine and its citizens.  Unfortunately, even though the opposite conclusion should be reached, the safety of nuclear facilities generally is likely to be called into question by some of the media and by anti-nuclear activists.  Although inherently in-correct, I fear that the perception may be left with the public that “nuclear facilities generally are inherently unsafe, and Putin could have been successful.”

Each of you can help dispel this erroneous view, and I call upon you to do so.   Reach out to your local media, or national media if you have the contacts, and help the reporters who may be struggling to get the facts “right” understand the safety of modern designs and the enhanced safety of advanced technologies. The strength of each of your voices is vital.  Please be actively engaged in helping everyone understand the facts.

As I am confident you are already doing, please continue to pray for the Ukrainian people.  And please pray that the resolve we have seen throughout the world to oppose the evil and barbaric actions of this rapacious Putin does not relent, and that the world unmistakably stands firm that this inhumane assault on civility will not stand.”
