The United States NuclearIndustry Council (USNIC) condemns in the strongest terms Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of the sovereign country of Ukraine, the attacks on innocent Ukrainian citizens, and on the assault on energy facilities throughout that country. We stand with the freedom-loving people of Ukraine, and with all those seeking to repel Putin’s invading forces.
Putin’s aggression in Ukraine has highlighted the critical importance of energy security and independence for the United States and its allies, and of reliable sources of energy and other critical materials. America should not be dependent on hostile entities for any critical materials, including those that help to produce the clean, reliable nuclear energy that provides about twenty percent of our nation’s electricity supply.
USNIC supports immediate efforts both to transition away from reliance on Russian energy supplies and to replace Russian imports of nuclear fuel and other critical materials with domestic production or imports from allied nations. We stand ready to work with the U.S. government and other stake holders to ensure that there can be a rapid and smooth transition away from such reliance. We eagerly seek to strengthen the U.S. nuclear fuel cycle, and to promote our nation’s energy security and independence for both now and the future.
