Fission, Fusion Nexus explored at Advanced Reactors Summit VI

December 13, 2018

Beyond Advanced Fission: The Nexus with Fusion Technologies will be a featured discussion with world class innovators and developers during the Advanced Reactors Summit VI symposium at UC San Diego on January 29-31.

Both advanced nuclear fission and fusion technologies face common challenges for advanced and innovative technology development, with one of the biggest challenges being materials to accommodate extreme operating conditions from high temperatures to corrosion to tolerance of high levels of radiation induced damage. The panel will highlight fusion systems under development and common challenges and joint opportunities for addressing these challenges.

Lead panel discussants include General Fusion CEO Christofer Mowry, General Atomics Advanced Materials Group Leader Dr. Christian Deck and University of Tennessee Governor's Chair Dr. Steven Zinkle.

The panel will be moderated by Dr. Farhat Beg who serves as the director of the Center for Energy Research (CER) at UC San Diego. CER plays a major role both on the national and international level providing support for the magnetic fusion program. CER is also the largest university collaborator in the DIII-D National Fusion Facility research program, located at General Atomics in San Diego (DIII-D is the largest fusion experiment in the U.S.). Participants in the AR Summit VI will also have the option to tour General Atomics' DIII-D National Fusion Facility.
